This could be interesting. Very interesting.

This could be interesting. Very interesting.

In the grand scheme of seismic events in Irish history, the events of 29 September 2008 will definitely rank amongst the most important.

Very few other nights will have had as much political, social and economic resonance as the Fianna Fail government’s decision to guarantee the collective debt of the entire domestic banking system. €60 billion, potential years of austerity, and the most expensive bank bailout in history.

We all know the fateful events that led up to the decision and we’re all still collectively dealing with the repercussions of the bailout, but a new film will try to shed new light on exactly what happened.

The Guarantee tells the story of that eventful night in Government Buildings and what led up to this monumental decision in Irish history. The story begins in 2004 and charts the peak of the boom and the beginning of the bust.

Love/Hate’s (almost unrecognisable) Peter Coonan plays former Anglo chief executive David Drumm, the late Brian Lenihan will be played by David Murray and Calvary’s Gary Lydon is cast as Brian Cowen.

We can’t help but get filled with rage every time we hear the sentence, “We need the moolah … and you’re going to give it to us.”

Take a look at the trailer below…
