Despite a body of work that includes Wayne’s World, Shrek and Inglorious Basterds, it seems as if Mike Myers is destined to go through life being remembered for one character and one character only, the guy from So I Married an Axe Murderer Austin Powers.
So when it emerged earlier this week that Myers and wife Kelly Tisdale were expecting their second child, nobody should have been surprised that local news anchors America reacted with a catchphrase from the Austin Powers movies that seemed most appropriate under the circumstances.
On Thursday night, the reaction of 30 or so of said news anchors was cobbled together in a clip for the Conan show and judging by the enthusiastic delivery of most of them, it appears as if they all thought they were being completely original and that the line came about as a result of an editorial meeting where everyone thought, ‘You know what NOBODY will expect us to say?’
As far as we’re concerned, a far more touching tribute would have been if everyone displayed their happiness for Myers and his wife on the news of their impending arrival with a little impromptu head-banging…
