John Oliver: Not such a big fan of the Catholic Church.
It seems like more than a week since Ireland made history and became the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote and it’s still the subject of much coverage in the international media.
You know something is a big deal when the excellent John Oliver covers it on Last Week Tonight and after his coverage of #Yokegate earlier this year, he turned his attention to the same-sex marriage referendum on last night’s show.
Sure, he pokes a little fun at a certain ad used to encourage a ‘yes’ vote and he uses it an opportunity to have a couple of digs at the Catholic Church and the Pope himself.
That said, the significance of last weekend’s vote and its impact on a global scale shines through throughout Oliver’s typically great segment.
It’s not the first time the world outside Ireland has showed its appreciation for a landmark decision and it no doubt won’t be the last.
