Video: Watch Steve Martin deliver an absolutely brilliant Honorary Oscar acceptance speech

Pass our manly man tissues please, we’ve got something in our eye...

Eoghan Doherty

“I can’t possibly express how excited I am tonight… because the Botox is fresh.”

Steve Martin. What a man.

The American stand-up comedian, author and expert bluegrass banjo player can now add “Oscar award-winning actor” to his CV, as this week he was presented with an Honourary Oscar at the Academy’s 5th Annual Governors Awards.

The star of hilarious JOE favourites such as The Jerk, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid and The Man With Two Brains paid tribute to his wife, friends and (mostly dead) agents as he accepted the Academy Honorary Award (est. 1948), an Oscar that is presented to celebrate motion picture achievements that are not covered by existing Academy Awards.

The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the comedian’s very, very funny, brilliant and genuinely moving acceptance speech (which is an art in itself), in which he had an onstage, Oxford Dictionary-approved selfie taken with Tom Hanks, talked about crying in front of his dog and delivered some killer lines including this particular cracker; “It is said that the art and craft of filmmaking is collaborative so, to be singled out and rewarded tonight, means that that is not true.”

Have your most manly of manly tissues at the ready and enjoy the naturally gifted and gracious funnyman’s super speech…

And check him out in one of his most iconic and surreal roles, The Man With Two Brains’ Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr…
