Our TV movie pick for tonight (Saturday, 14 February) is Saving Private Ryan, which has been called "the best war film of all time".
Set in 1944 France during World War II, the blockbuster follows a group of soldiers, led by Captain John Miller (Oscar-winner Tom Hanks), on their mission to locate Private James Francis Ryan (Oscar-winner Matt Damon) and bring him home safely after his three brothers are killed in action.
Renowned for its powerful story and hard-hitting combat scenes, particularly its opening Omaha Beach sequence (which was actually shot in Ireland), Saving Private Ryan won five Oscars, including Best Director for Spielberg.
The movie was named the greatest war film of all time in a poll on the website Ranker.
Over 56,000 voters came together to rank the best of the genre. Out of them, the Spielberg classic came out on top, beating Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down (#2) and Oliver Stone’s Platoon (#3).
Saving Private Ryan is airing on TV tonight on RTÉ2 at 9.10pm. The movie is also streaming on Netflix and Paramount+.
