Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 23 September) is Fresh, the excellent 2022 horror thriller from first-time feature filmmaker Mimi Cave (Holland).
The story centres around Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones, Normal People), a young woman fed up with dating. She believes her luck has turned around, though, when she meets Steve (Oscar-nominee Sebastian Stan, The Apprentice), a guy who seems perfect.
After several great dates, Steve invites Noa for a romantic weekend getaway alone with him. Not long after she accepts, however, she discovers that her new paramour has been hiding some "unusual appetites".
To reveal any more would spoil some of the twisty thrills of Fresh. We'll just say that the movie doubles as a compellingly disturbing horror thriller and a twisted satire of modern dating culture.
The film also benefits from three great performances by Edgar-Jones, Stan and Jonica T. Gibbs - playing Noa's best friend - as well as from Cave's stylish direction.
Particularly striking is the moment about 30 minutes into Fresh when its title finally appears on screen as the movie switches genres from a rom-com into something much darker...
Holding an 82% Rotten Tomatoes score, the horror thriller is airing on TV tonight on Film4 at 10.55pm.
Fresh is also currently streaming on Disney+ and will be available to watch on Channel 4's website from Wednesday, 24 September.
