Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 1 April) is Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, the very underrated, stand-alone sequel in the hit horror-thriller franchise.
This spooky seventh entry in the found-footage series centres around Margot (rising star Emily Bader, People We Meet on Vacation), an aspiring filmmaker. She is making a documentary about the search for her long-lost mother, who abandoned her outside a hospital when she was a baby.
Through a genetics site, Margot meets a blood relative named Samuel, an Amish man currently going through his rumspringa.
Samuel leads Margot and her documentary crew to Beiler Farm, where Margot's mother came from.
"Following a string of strange occurrences and discoveries, Margot soon realises this community that welcomed them into their home might be hiding something sinister," the plot synopsis adds.
Penned by returning writer Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Heart Eyes) but directed by series newcomer William Eubank (Land of Bad, Underwater), Next of Kin was a big shake-up for the franchise, departing from the pre-existing Paranormal Activity mythology to tell its own cool, unique story.

The movie also looks very different to the previous Paranormal Activity entries. As the sequel focuses on characters who are filmmakers, the found-footage-style camerawork feels more polished than the shaky, rawer visuals typically seen in the sub-genre.
Also, the Amish community in Next of Kin is situated on a remote rural farm near snowy Buffalo, New York, which allows for lots of beautiful, atmospheric and moody cinematography.
Thanks to Bader's likeable lead turn, Eubank's stylish direction, Landon's twisty script, and the movie's haunting and thrilling closing moments, we'd recommend this stand-alone sequel to both Paranormal Activity fans and newcomers to the franchise.
Paranormal Activity is airing on TV tonight/tomorrow morning on Film4 at 1.05am. The film is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play, Prime Video, Rakuten TV and the Sky Store.
