MANK

Directed by David Fincher, but the screenplay was written by his father.

We’ve been waiting for it for a long time but the wait for the first look at David Fincher’s new film MANK is over.

Netflix premiered the first trailer on Thursday, giving fans plenty to think about ahead of its release on the streaming platform in December.

The story centers on Herman J. Mankiewicz, the Oscar-winning co-writer of Citizen Kane, as he overcomes battles to finish the script for Orson Welles’ iconic drama.

The movie is a passion project for Fincher as his father, Jack, wrote the screenplay before passing away in April 2003.

Gary Oldman stars as Mankiewicz, opposite Tom Burke as Orson Welles. The cast also includes Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Ferdinand Kingsley, Tom Pelphrey and Arliss Howard.

Netflix’s official description reads:

“1930s Hollywood is re-evaluated through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay of Citizen Kane for Orson Welles.”

There’s some hype behind this release with Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin recently raving about the film.

“[MANK is] so freaking good,” Sorkin told MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“Written by [Fincher’s] dad, who is a brilliant screenwriter. But David has directed this movie just magnificently. It’s breathtaking even by David Fincher standards. Gary Oldman gives an amazing performance, so does Lily Collins, and so does Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies.”
