WATCH: The first trailer for The Last Duel, the epic film Matt Damon made in Ireland

Rory Cashin

This was the movie that had Matt Damon in Ireland during the lockdown.

There was a time last year when it felt like we could barely move without bumping into Matt Damon.

Of course, those in the know are aware that he wasn’t the only Hollywood megastar in the country at the time, but he was the most publicly visible, thanks to his major role in The Last Duel.

Damon also co-wrote the screenplay with his BFF Ben Affleck, who also stars in the movie, alongside Killing Eve star Jodie Comer and Star Wars legend Adam Driver.

Directed by Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator, The Martian), it is based on the true story of King Charles VI (Affleck), who declares that Knight Jean de Carrouges (Damon) should settle his dispute with his squire LeGris (Driver) by challenging him to a duel.

The dispute is based around a claim by Carrouges’ wife (Comer), who publicly accuses LeGris of assaulting her while Carrogues was away from their home.

Unlike Ridley Scott’s previous action-packed period dramas, this time around it looks to be dealing with the political machinations and public image of the story, both of which can often prove to be even more deadly than an all-out battle.

The Last Duel is due in Irish cinemas on Friday, 15 October this year.
