WATCH: Marvel finally reveals Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Rory Cashin

This is Marvel’s next big release this year after Black Widow.

2020 marked the first year since 2009 that we didn’t get a single new Marvel movie, due to the reshuffling of a lot of projects and cinema closures caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

2021 is already making up for it, with WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier arriving early, Loki and even more Disney+ shows on the way and Black Widow finally making her solo arrival in July, which will then be followed up by THREE MORE movies.

Eternals is due in November and Spider-Man: No Way Home is due in December, but before then we’ll be getting Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12, Just Mercy), it will tell the story of Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), a man who was trained as an assassin but attempted to escape into a normal life. Ten years’ later, the Ten Rings group have found him again, and attempt to bring him back into the fold.

The movie also stars Awkwafina (Ocean’s 8) and Michelle Yeoh (Tomorrow Never Dies), as well as Tony Leung (Hero), who is reportedly playing iconic Marvel villain The Mandarin. Now, MCU fans will remember that Iron Man 3 had both Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce play The Mandarin, so if or how this will relate to that, we’ve got to wait and see.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be released in Irish cinemas on Friday, 3 September.
