The issue has been the topic of much conversation this week.
There has been uncertainty this week surrounding the ownership of the new National Maternity Hospital which is set to be built on the grounds of St Vincent’s Hospital.
With the St Vincent’s Healthcare Group owned by the religious order Sisters of Mercy, it was announced the new maternity hospital would also be owned by the religious order, because it owns the land on which it’s being built.
The news caused massive controversy this week with people decrying the move and a petition set up to block the move receiving over 80,000 signatures.
There has been a lot of anger that the 300 million taxpayer-funded will be owned by the religious order when finished.
Speaking earlier this week, Minister for Health Simon Harris said that there will be no questions of religious interference at the hospital.
“I want to make sure that no religious order makes one cent from this move,” Harris said in a statement.
It was also announced that the status of the new National Maternity Hospital would be reviewed with St Vincent’s Healthcare Group’s Jimmy Menton saying it is due to “controversy and misinformation” regarding the project.
Dr Ciara Kelly appeared on the Late Late Show last night and spoke about the subject of ownership of the Hospital.
Her solution was simple: “Let’s buy the land and own the hospital.”
Many people thought she spoke a lot of sense on the issue.
Simple solution from @ciarakellydoc on #LateLateShow the nmh, buy land. Much easier than golden shares, triple locks and master ship systems
