An action-packed blockbuster is one of the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It launched a series of hit films.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 30 April) is Godzilla, the 2014 American monster film directed by Gareth Edwards (The Creator, Rogue One).

It centres around Navy bomb expert Ford Brody (played by the rumoured next 007 Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who is forced to leave his family in San Francisco and go to Japan to help his estranged scientist father, Joe (Bryan Cranston).

“Soon, both men are swept up in an escalating crisis when Godzilla, King of the Monsters, arises from the sea to combat malevolent adversaries that threaten the survival of humanity,” the plot synopsis reads.

“The creatures leave colossal destruction in their wake, as they make their way toward their final battleground: San Francisco.”

Co-starring David Strathairn, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins, the 2014 reboot of Godzilla was a major success – both at the box office and with critics.

In particular, it garnered praise for Edwards’ incredibly muscular direction, the movie’s dark tone, its stunning cinematography and its fine cast.

The film also wound up launching the MonsterVerse franchise, which still continues to this day – with its fifth entry Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire being released in cinemas just a few weeks ago.

2014’s Godzilla is airing on TV tonight at 9pm on Sky Showcase. It is also available to stream on Sky Movies.
