Aengus Mac Grianna

Gone, but never forgotten.

One of RTÉ’s most popular broadcasters hung up his microphone and sharp suit for the last time today, as news anchor Aengus Mac Grianna says “beir beannacht” one last time to the national broadcaster that made him famous.

Finishing up his decades-long stint in television, Mac Grianna ended his iconic career with his final broadcast on the Six One news on Saturday evening.

On the show, the RTÉ News crew decided to put together a montage of the newsreader’s best bits to commemorate their colleague in the best way they knew how.

The video piece, which included some of his earliest shows with the national broadcaster, and a number of his internationally-famous and highly-publicised bloopers, poked harmless fun at a man who will be dearly missed by the Irish public.

Because really, who can forget his hair flicks and make-up top-ups.

The Raheny-native star started out in RTÉ in 1987 as a runner before moving onto radio news reading two years later.

From there, Mac Grianna headed to television to become a newsreader, where he spent the rest of his thirty-one years at the station and became beloved across Ireland.

Lest we forget, Mac Grianna accidentally became a viral internet sensation back in 2013 after footage of him touching up his make-up and fixing his tie aired.

If you’ve never seen Aengus Mac Grianna’s glorious blooper reel before, check it out here.
