WATCH: Star Wars director Rian Johnson absolutely loved filming in Ireland

Paul Moore

A ‘big chunk’ of the film takes place in Ireland.

Star Wars Celebration has ended and while plenty of people were talking about the stellar action in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, there’s no doubting which film in the Star Wars saga has the most Irish interest.

Rian Johnson’s upcoming Episode VIII has been filming in Clare, Cork and Donegal recently and it seems that the director absolutely loved using the Irish landscape in the world’s most anticipated film.

He says “In addition to sets, a big chunk of the film takes place Ireland. In addition to Skellig Michael, we shot along the west coast of Ireland in a lot of really incredible locations. It was amazing getting out there and suddenly having this whole other texture to the film.

“The natural beauty of that coastline and being able to put them out there, and film it while standing behind the camera was just incredible”, he says.
