Brought to you by Currys.

There’s nothing quite like a big movie to bring the family together, especially when you’ve got the perfect home entertainment set-up for summer nights in.

That's why we’re teaming up with Currys, the home of home entertainment, this summer. Currys have got all the kit to make your family movie night unforgettable. They have the tech you love, and that the whole family will adore, too, from amazing 4K quality screens to exclusive offers on HD soundbars.

With Currys, JOE has already published two of three family film night recommendations. You can read those articles here and here.

We've saved the best for last, however. Our final recommendation is Wolfwalkers, the stunning Oscar-nominated Irish fantasy adventure.

The animated film is set in Kilkenny town in the year 1650. It follows Robyn Goodfellowe (Honor Kneafsey), a rebellious young girl from England, who has moved to the Irish county with her father, Bill (Sean Bean).

Watch the trailer for Wolfwalkers right here:

Bill is a hunter and has been summoned by the Lord Protector (Simon McBurney), an authoritarian English general and statesman ruling in Ireland, to exterminate the wolves which live in the surrounding forest. This is so that the Lord Protector can "civilise" the land and expand his town.

Missing England and longing to be a hunter like her dad, Robyn sneaks out into the woods, where she stumbles into a pack of wolves. She is saved by Mebh (Eva Whittaker), a young Irish girl who lives deep in the wilds of the forest.

Mebh explains that she is a Wolfwalker, someone whose spirit can leave her human body and become a wolf. Wolfwalkers can also communicate with wolves and possess special healing abilities.

As Mebh and Robyn bond, Robyn realises that the wolves are not the villains the Lord Protector has made them out to be. She struggles, however, to convince her father of this, who is determined to carry out his cruel master's plans.

Made by the acclaimed Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon, Wolfwalkers premiered in 2020. It is the stand-alone third part of director Tomm Moore's 'Irish folklore trilogy', which also includes 2009's The Secret of Kells and 2014's Song of the Sea.

Co-directed with Ross Stewart, Moore's latest is a crowd-pleasing adventure that anyone can enjoy. The story is filled with exciting action, lovable heroes, and adorable animals. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy, love, and nature.

What's even more impressive about Wolfwalkers is that it is so universally accessible while being deeply steeped in quite specific Irish history and mythology. This is the type of PG movie that could spark an interest in youngsters who watch it about the Emerald Isle's past and its folklore.

The hand-drawn animation is beautifully detailed and painterly. It's complemented by a stunning autumnal colour palette full of lush greens and oranges, as well as by a rousing soundtrack by composer Bruno Coulais and Irish folk group Kíla.

On top of this, the entire voice cast gives lively and energetic performances. Kneafsey and Whittaker, in particular, have audiences rooting for their protagonists right away.

In supporting roles, comedians Tommy Tiernan and the late Jon Kenny bring an added dose of humour, while Maria Doyle Kennedy leaves a major impression as an important character who shows up late in the game.

Wolfwalkers earned a deserved Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. A spin-off prequel series titled Mebh and the Wolf Pups is also in the works.

Before the show comes out, you can stream Wolfwalkers on Apple TV. For families looking to level up movie nights this summer, Currys has a range of 50”+ TVs designed to bring blockbuster entertainment home.
