Here are the 9 best movies on TV this evening

It’s Friday night, let’s party! Or not.

For those of you who’d much rather relax and huddle up on the couch this evening, we’re here to help by pointing you in the direction of the best films on the telly.

Thankfully, there are a fair few to choose from today (22 February).

The Danish Girl – RTÉ One – 23:50

Eddie Redmayne puts in an Oscar-nominated performance as Elbe, one of the first women to ever receive gender reassignment surgery. Alicia Vikander puts in an Oscar-winning performance as Danish painter Gerda Wegener. Good movie to tick off the bucket list.

The Hunted – Virgin Media One – 22:00

This movie is actually pretty terrible, but it does star Benicio Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones acting like hard men so if you’re into action films then you’ll probably really enjoy it.

Man About Dog – Virgin Media Three – 21:00

An Irish comedy film that broke Irish box-office records at the time. Definitely a spiritual precursor to newer comedies like The Hardy Bucks and The Young Offenders. Don’t miss it!

X-Men: First Class – E4 – 20:00

Now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has so thoroughly crushed its competition, movies like this one are less impressive… But anyone who likes superhero flicks should still tune in to this Professor X/Magneto origin story.

If nothing else, this will serve as a nice refresher course ahead of the X-Men’s introduction to the MCU now that Disney has bought Fox.

Rocky V – UTV – 23:15

Rocky V is far from the most-heralded of the Rocky films. Indeed, it is probably the least-heralded. He goes back to his street-fighting roots for a scrap with Tommy Gunn, played by real-life boxer Tommy Morrison. Also stars Sage Stallone, Sylvester Stallone’s son, who passed away in 2012.

Shaun of the Dead – ITV2 – 21:00

One of the best, most quotable comedies of recent times. Let’s go to The Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over.

The Rock – ITV4 – 21:00

A Michael Bay blockbuster that we love here at JOE. We love it so much that we’ve written a quiz about it!

Inception – SyFy – 21:00

There is much debate over the ending of Inception, and now is your chance to revisit Christopher Nolan’s classic sci-fi film and break your brain again trying to work out what actually happens. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Ellen Page and Michael Caine.

Wayne’s World 2 – Comedy Central – 18:00

A nice, family-friendly early-evening comedy. Some of Mike Myers’ absolute best work. The iconic Wayne and Garth are always worth a watch.
