Movies on TV

Comedy classics and one of Tarantino’s best.

There are no shortage of options on the box tonight, with special thanks to the return of Graham Norton on the BBC. Similarly, there’s plenty of Irish interest on tonight’s instalment of The Late Late Show.

But if you’re not in the mood for a chat show, there are several very strong movies on TV tonight to take your fancy – not least one of Quentin Tarantino’s best.

We’ve compiled six of our top choices to help you with the fateful decision.

American Pie – 9pm – ITV2

One of the most memorable comedies of all time. Maybe the most quintessentially ’90s film that has ever existed. This one time, at band camp…

High Plains Drifter – 9pm – ITV4

Directed by and starring Clint Eastwood as a mysterious man called The Stranger, who saves a town from ne’er-do-wells before seizing control of the town and exacting his own violence on the residents of the town. It’s pretty dope.

It also has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes if you needed further convincing.

Lonely Are the Brave – 9.05pm – TG4

Another cowboy and western movie, this time starring old-school heavyweights such as Kirk Douglas, Walter Matthau, Gena Rowlands and George Kennedy. Cowboy escapes from jail and runs from the authorities; the classic western.

Jackie Brown – 10pm – Dave

Some consider it to be Tarantino’s best movie, though it is certainly the least Tarantino-y. His third flick after Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, this one stars Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Robert De Niro and Michael Keaton.

My Brother the Devil – BBC Two NI – 11.45pm

A crime drama set in modern-day London. The son of an Egyptian immigrant idolises his older brother, who is a drug dealer, while the brother wants him to make something more of himself.

Man on Fire – 11.50pm – RTÉ One

Denzel Washington stars as a bodyguard to a kidnapped child, and he’s out for revenge. And when Denzel Washington wants revenge, you know shit is about to go down.

Perfect post-Late Late Show viewing.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
