#TRAILERCHEST: You Were Never Really Here looks like a demented mix of Drive and Taxi Driver

The incredibly dark thriller is getting a lot of Oscar talk.

“They tell me that you’re pretty brutal.” “I can be.”

Welcome to #TrailerChest, where we’re taking a sneak peek at the brand new trailer for You Were Never Really Here.

Plot’s it all about?

Based on a novel that essentially reads like a version of Taken that has been, well, taken down the darkest possible path, the movie version of You Were Never Really Here takes that darkness and goes ten times further still.

Phoenix plays a suicidal hitman who has been hired by New York senator (Manette) to find his 12 year old daughter (Samsonov) who has been kidnapped and sold into a paedophilia ring in Manhattan that only caters to the highest of high profile clients.

We did warn you that it was dark.

Adapted and directed by Ramsey – who has been AWOL since We Need To Talk About Kevin back 2011 – who went on to win Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as being directed for the top prize Palme d’Or.

On top of that, Phoenix won Best Actor there too, while some of early reviews have been nothing short of stellar, describing it a violent, hallucinatory, incredibly dark and twisted thriller that mixes elements of Drive and Taxi Driver, all of which combined has a lot of people talking potential Oscars for it once it gets a full release.

Starring:  Joaquin PhoenixEkaterina Samsonov, Alex Manette and Alessandro Nivola.

Directed by: Lynne Ramsey

Irish release date: TBC, but most European countries (where it is called A Beautiful Day) are getting it mid-November, so UK and Ireland should get it around that time too.

Enjoy!
