5 Electric Picnic events you probably haven’t heard of

A few hidden gems…

The acts have all been announced, tickets have been swept up and we know who’ll be playing the main stage. Electric Picnic isn’t all about the big names though, as there is no shortage of great things to enjoy if you’re looking for something a bit different.

From blacksmiths and basket makers to Irish-speaking camps, there’s a good chance you won’t even have to go near the main stage.

Banquet at Electric Picnic

If you’ve grown tired of eating sub-standard food, this 5-Star restaurant certainly offers something different. With a dress code of “Black Tie come Festival Fabulous,” they’ll provide you with attire if you didn’t pack your Sunday best.

It isn’t exactly your usual festival fare either. For €120 per person, you’ll enjoy a five-course meal of Irish salmon gravlax, with dry-aged Angus beef for main. There are delicious options for vegetarians too, and it’s all in aid of Temple Street and Pieta House.

La Fura dels Baus

Performing in Ireland for the first time ever, La Fura dels Baus have created the “Human Seed” show especially for Electric Picnic. Featuring 55 Irish volunteers, the incredible spectacle will include a massive human net that will hover over 40ft above the crowd!

Recognised around the world for their spectacular shows, you can expect everything from slapstick humour to groundbreaking stunts at their shows. Definitely not one to be missed if you want to see something truly unique at this year’s festival.

Gaeltacht Campsite

For the first time ever, Gaeilgeoirs will have their own designated area at the festival to converse in their native tongue. With space for 200 people to set up and talk amongst themselves in Irish, it’s been organised as part of Bliain na Gaeilge 2018.

There will even be a cafe in the area where you can order in Irish and flex your Irish-speaking muscles a bit. With some great traditional music on offer too, it’s great to see the Irish language being featured at this year’s festival.

BBQ Firepit

You don’t need to go to the chipper van for every meal. Instead, why not opt for some succulent beef brisket slowly cooked for 20-hours, and delicious pork ribs falling off the bone?

In association with Tesco, The Firepit is set to bring Texas-style BBQ food to Electric Picnic. Cooked by a World Champion pitmaster, you’d be hard set to find a better grillin’ spot in County Laois.

GreenCrafts Village

In between all the fantastic acts on offer, it would be easy to forget you could have spent your time learning how to be a blacksmith. Not only is the GreenCrafts area a place for you to learn a new craft or watch a master at work, some of the tents let you create your own mementoes to bring home with you.

Everything from craft making, blacksmithing, basketry and woodwork are on display this year. Expect it to be a bit quieter than most other places, so it’s a great place to go if you want a break from all the crowds at the stages.

Tesco at Electric Picnic will be open 24hr in the Andy Warhol campsite from 4 pm on Thursday 30 August for the duration of the festival, selling everything from last-minute essentials to fresh groceries.

The official supermarket of Electric Picnic, they will be there for all your festival needs.
