Another 10 summer songs that should be on your barbecue playlist

Sunny tunes for sunny times

Eric Lalor

Sunny tunes for sunny times.

We weren’t ready for this. Nobody expected it. The only thing we can do is accept it and maybe remove some clothes.

There is an unexpected heatwave in the weather area and we embrace it in all its glory. The summer vibes are back and with that another playlist for you to wrap your ear lobes around.

Livin’ Joy – Dreamer

This is a tune scientifically proven to have you dancing no matter what your mood. A group of scientists working on the Hadron Collider took a break and did an experiment on it.

Nobody could resist the urge to throw a few shapes when it was played out loud.

Kings of Leon – Slow Night, So Long

There was a time when these lads made epic music and this tune symbolises the quality and greatness they could reach. This is music from the deep south and it’s covered in sunshine.

Taken from their superb Aha Shake Heatbreak album, the sheer velocity of bass and drums will leave you gasping for a drink. You’re grand, you’re at a barbecue, knock yourself out.

Cubic 22 – Night In Motion

The era of acid house and raves were upon us and tunes such as this dominated our earholes. Released on the XL recordings label way back in 1991, this is a tune which screams Ibiza and sunshine.

The fellah on the track yells ‘Party Time!’ and yes, yes it is. Get your whistles and air horns out for this one.

This is, as they say in the business, a banging tune. Listen to it bang. Go on. Are you listening? Isn’t it banging?

Doves – Pounding

This is an absolute stomper of a tune from Doves. From the outset, the drum kicks in and is relentless till the end. It’s called Pounding for a reason.

‘Let’s leave at sunrise, let’s sleep at the ocean.’ No bother lads, no bother at all.

Jay-Z – 99 Problems

Taken from his 2004 The Black Album, there are fewer tunes out there which force us to strut confidently across a field like a proud peacock proudly prancing.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not a song about the inability of ice-cream cones to refrain from melting in the sunshine. This has attitude, it has balls and it’s going to get everyone at the barbecue up and strutting.

Atlantic Ocean – Waterfall

Another classic from the 90s and the explosion of dance music. This is such a summery tune, you will have to apply sunblock before listening to it.

An absolute gem of a tune which has summery vibes in every orifice.

MGMT – Kids

American psychedellic electronic funkmasters MGMT unleashed this pearler upon the world back in 2009. It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly six years old.

A brilliant song from start to finish and one which never fails to bring us somewhere sunny. Look! I’m in Spain!

Lightning Seeds – Pure

The Lightning Seeds were another in a long line of bands from Liverpool who knew how to write songs with infectious melodies.

This is pure indie pop at its very best and will put a smile on anyone’s face. Even if they have dropped their burger on the grass.

Curve – Horror Head

Horror at a barbecue I hear you ask. Stick with this one. Another indie classic from the 90s, this features the vocal talents of the very beautiful and talented Toni Halliday.

It’s got all the spangly guitars that you could wave a spangly banner at coupled with a ridiculously catchy chorus. Listen to this a couple of times and it’s lodged in your ear hole for days.

Aztec Camera – Somewhere In My Heart

From way back in 1987 this is one of the greatest summery tunes you could ever hear. This proved to be the Scottish band’s biggest hit.

No surprise there as it’s pretty much the perfect song. It’s got all the nice things and will leave you feeling a tad sunburnt.
