“I never had the Orangemen walking through my neighbourhood saying, you know, get the Catholic kid and beat him up… I didn’t have any of that kind of turmoil.”

Jon Bon Jovi has made a fairly bonkers statement about Bono’s upbringing in Ireland.

In an interview on the Armchair Expert podcast from last week, Bon Jovi was discussing his own childhood, and speaking about how comparatively speaking, he had it relatively easy.

He compared himself to the U2 frontman, who he believes had it an awful lot worse than most when he was growing up in Dublin…

He said: “Bono is… just a couple of months older I think. His upbringing was obviously very different than mine.

“I never had the Orangemen walking through my neighbourhood saying, you know, ‘get the Catholic kid and beat him up’. You know I didn’t have any of that kind of turmoil.”

Bono, as we all know, grew up in north Dublin, so maybe Mr Jovi is slightly misremembering things.

Either that or Bono, real name Paul Hewson, might be telling his rock star mate a few fibs. We’ll let you be the judge of that…
