David Kitt calls out James Blunt over “completely fabricated” story in book

“I simply said a polite hello.”

Irish musician David Kitt has called out James Blunt for what he says is a “completely fabricated Alan Partridge version” of an encounter the two shared some years ago.

The story, which appeared in Blunt’s new autobiography ‘Loosely Based On A Made-Up Story’, details a gig which allegedly had a record label pit the two singers against each other, with the winner getting a deal.

Blunt claims that the Dubliner called him a c**t backstage at the gig – a claim that Kitt refutes. Judging by the name of the book, the story is more than likely not true.

Blunt is well known for his self-deprecating humour and has made numerous jokes about his own career, so the new book is well within the realms of what we can expect from the musician.

Describing his new book, Blunt says: “The truth is My Truth is not The Truth, and that’s as honest as I can be. It’s partially true, rather than painfully true, and I have possibly been economical with the truth, Your Honour. Basically, I made this sh*t up…”

One chapter of the book tells the story of how Blunt landed a deal with Atlantic Records in 2004, to what we’re told is at Kitt’s expense.

The You’re Beautiful singer said that they both performed at a gig at Bush Hall on the Uxbridge Road in 2004, with Kitt offering Blunt the use of his band’s sound man, agreeing they would split the sound check times.

However, the book says that Kitt reneged on his offer and took up the entirety of the soundcheck, while also addressing him as “James C**t” backstage ahead of the gig.

The Irish musician took to Twitter to clear up the story, saying: “Just reading James Blunt‘s completely fabricated Alan Partridge version of what happened this day in 2004.

“Congrats to him on his great career and being a funny guy, but the truth I simply said a polite hello backstage and had no idea who he was or any of the issues mentioned.”

Despite the story being almost certainly joke, it was probably best for Kitt to clear up any confusion, just in case of any backlash. Or perhaps one of 2024’s most unexpected musical feuds is just getting started.
