There was a time when counting sheep was the most reliable method of catching a few zzzs, but in the technological age we live in, that dated method has been replaced by custom-made sleep playlists on Spotify.
We’re not sure whether he’ll take it as a compliment or not, but Ed Sheeran has a huge presence on such playlists according to a recent Spotify poll which ranked the top 20 most-streamed songs in Sleep playlists worldwide.
According to Billboard, seven out of the 20 songs were penned by the Ed-meister, with ‘Thinking Out Loud’ coming in at number one ahead of Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’ and Ellie Goulding’s ‘Love Me Like You Do’.
Spotify spokesperson Angela Watts was keen to point out that ‘Sleep’ is one of Spotify’s most popular categories and that Spotify listeners use it for general relaxation and to help themselves unwind as opposed to using it specifically to go into dreamland.
While Ed’s critics will point to such a poll as proof that Sheeran’s brand of inoffensive pop is the perfect thing to put a man to sleep, it also provides evidence of his enduring popularity amongst Spotify users that his songs make up almost half of the 20 places on the list.
Somehow, given the phenomenal success he’s enjoyed of late, we don’t think Ed will be losing too much sleep over this list either way.
