Bass, brass, brilliant…

JOE continues our look at some of our favourite all-time classic songs with one of Motown’s definitive songs.

Artist, album and year: Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Dance Party, 1965

Why is it a classic? In lyrical terms, most people can relate to being stick in a dead-end relationship that’s going absolutely nowhere with someone you can’t help but love.

It’s very hard to dwell on the somewhat sombre lyrics when the percussion, tambourine and drums kick in.

Did you know? : The song has frequently been used during American football contests and other sporting events, usually to taunt opposing teams who are loosing.

The lyrical hook: “I know you’re no good for me, But free of you, I’ll never be”.
