JOE’s Song Of The Day #706 Pillow Queens ‘Gay Girls’

Eric Lalor

Pillow Queens

Pillow Queens are back with a belter.

Pillow Queens, consisting of band members Sarah Corcoran, Pamela Connolly, Cathy McGuinness and Rachel Lyons, formed in the autumn of 2016 and have made a considerable mark on the Irish music scene already.

Within a few months of their formation they had released their debut EP, Calm Girls, titled in an ironic nod to the band’s anxious nature. By the summer of 2017, the band were touring the UK and performing on festival stages.

They released a follow up EP , State of the State, in February 2018 to critical acclaim. While taking influence from artists from contemporary US DIY indie & punk scenes (such as Mitski, Waxahatchee, Hop Along, Cloud Nothings), Pillow Queens stay true to their Irish heritage, using Dublin colloquialisms in their lyrics and singing in thick Irish accents.

The accompanying video to the new release was directed by Kate Dolan. She said of the video: “The song is such a belter, when the band came and asked me to do a video for it I was delighted. The girls had an idea about four girls running away on their communion day. I thought it was a great fit for the song, so I wrote up a treatment around the idea. I wanted to capture the pure joy of being a kid, and those days you remember as being totally perfect.
