JOE’s Song Of The Day #747 – V98 ‘Dublin’

Eric Lalor

V98

The first single from V98’s debut EP.

V98, a Dublin four-piece, formed just over a year ago and are ready to unleash the first single from their debut EP.

The band consists of Darragh Geoghegan (vocals), Conor Healy (lead guitar), Craig Geoghegan (bass guitar) and Richie O’Brien (drums). V98 started in January 2018, when Darragh, Conor and Richie decided to turn their regular musical get-togethers into something more meaningful.

It was not until Craig, a cousin of Darragh’s who had moved to Ireland in May, joined the band as a bass player that the group really began to assume their identity and find the sound that defines them today.

V98’s ‘Dublin’ encompasses all the ingredients for an indie pop-rock classic, paired with a video featuring some iconic Dublin locations.

The band told us: “The aim for ‘Dublin’ was to take traditional lyrical themes of love and loss – which can be voiced in quite a disembodied way in a lot of songs – and tether them to a very real location: the city which we have all lived in, left, and returned to at some time or another in our lives.

“At the same time there’s a kind of knowing wink to the often kitschy idea of “Irishness” in this song. Folk music references, Dublin bus routes, a Celtic sounding breakdown and, crucially, like most Irish love stories, it begins in the back of a pub.”
