POLL: Tell us your favourite David Bowie album

Tony Cuddihy

One of the greatest icons in music history has died at the age of 69.

It’s a sad day, with the news early on Monday morning that David Bowie has died.

Described by the BBC’s Will Gompertz as ‘the Picasso of pop,’ news of Bowie’s death is all the more shocking given the fact that he only released Blackstar on Friday, his 69th birthday. It would be his 26th studio album.

With a career that spanned six decades, Bowie reached a level of stardom equalled only by The Beatles, Elvis Presley and The Rolling Stones in the timeless nature of his music.

Bowie – born David Jones on 8 January, 1947 in Brixton – also created alter-egos in Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and The Thin White Duke that would become as iconic as the man himself.

Last week we featured the video for the latest Bowie single, Lazarus, not knowing that the great man was entering the final days of his 18-month struggle with cancer.

The promo was every bit as enigmatic as the man himself, with Blackstar proving a hit with critics and sure to be a fitting coda to the greatest career in pop history.
