A huge coup for the boys from Westmeath…

Rising Mullingar outfit The Academic have just landed the biggest support slot of their young lives – opening for The Rolling Stones at Croke Park next month.

The popular indie-pop group have enjoyed a fine 2018 so far, with debut album Tales From The Backseat going straight to the top spot on the Irish Albums Chart and winning critical acclaim around the world.

As revealed on Monday, they will now take to the stage at Croker on Thursday 17 May as the Rolling Stones officially kick off the No Filter tour.

“I think we are all still getting over that phone call!” noted the band in a statement released on Monday afternoon.

“To be sharing the stage with the greatest rock and roll band of all time in a venue that we’ve always dreamed about performing in is a bit surreal,” they added.

“We grew up on their music. Now that we’re playing Croker with them, it’s a dream fulfilled.”

A limited number of extra tickets for the Stones gig were released on Monday.

Despite opposition from the Croke Park Residents’ Association, the show is set to go ahead after an official licence was granted by Dublin City Council.
