The Stone Roses are set to release a third album this summer

Conor Heneghan

This would be brilliant.

Speculation is mounting that the Stone Roses will release a third album to coincide with a string of live dates this summer.

The hugely popular Manchester band haven’t released any new material since their second album, Second Coming in 1994, an album that met with lukewarm reviews and was followed by the break-up of the band soon afterwards.

The Stone Roses have pencilled in a number of live gigs this summer, including four nights at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester (three of which have sold-out) and a much-anticipated performance in Marlay Park in Dublin on July 9.

There has been no official confirmation that the band will release new material ahead of those summer gigs, but a source told The Mirror that album number three is in the works.

“Ian Brown and the lads have been busy getting their next album ready,” the source said.

“It will be album number three. It’s a long time coming but they feel the time is right now. They’ve been back in the studio. Everyone is very excited about it.”

It’s hard to get too excited until it’s official, but here’s hoping this belongs in the ‘no smoke without fire’ category and there are some new tunes to look forward to ahead of the summer.
