The Sunday Sessions: Rainy Boy Sleep is definitely one name to remember

If he's good enough for Gary Lightbody, then he's good enough for JOE.

JOE

This week we’re back in the Vintage Room of The Workman’s Club, Dublin with Stevie Martin a.k.a Rainy Boy Sleep.

Stevie, who hails from the glorious Co. Derry, released his debut EP in August, which was met by rave reviews and its title track, Ambulance, has received massive airplay on Irish radio.

With his distinct folktronica sound, clever songwriting and lyrics that beautifully combine the subjects of love, loss, hope and redemption, polished of with the perfect touch of dark humour, it comes as no surprise that Rainy Boy Sleep is one of the latest signings to the Universal Music umbrella.

The 26-year-old has received high praise from fellow northerner, Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol, (if he’s good enough for Gary Lightbody, then he’s good enough for JOE), and is very familiar with the festival scene, having graced the stage of Glastonbury for three consecutive years.

The singer-songwriter has been on the same bill as some of the industry’s greats, touring with the likes of James Morrison and Cyndi Lauper.

One of Stevie’s standout moments to date was being asked to join Lauper onstage at the Hammersmith Apollo to sing her phenomenal global hit ‘Time After Time’ in front of 3,500 fans.

Stevie sits down with our sister site Her.ie’s Grace O’ Reilly for a quick chat about sharing his real name with a very famous actor, his alias, songwriting and future band plans before performing hit track, Ambulance.

The Derry native also performed another track, ‘One After One’, taken from his debut EP.

You can catch Rainy Boy Sleep live this month as he completes the second half of his tour dates – Spirit Store, Dundalk Oct 17th, Tara Na Ri, Navan Oct 18th, Black Box, Belfast Oct 23rd, Mason’s in his hometown of Derry on Oct 24th, Letterkenny’s Green Room Oct 25th and The Workman’s Club, Dublin on November 28th.

Rainy Boy Sleep’s Ambulance EP is available to download now on iTunes. For more you can check out Rainy Boy Sleep on Facebook, Twitter or rainyboysleep.com
