Tiësto did a hardstyle version of ‘Zombie’ and it’s the worst thing to ever happen

Right.

Urban Dictionary defines ‘hardstyle’ as:

“Hardstyle is a genre of EDM characterised by heavy bass and high BPM counts, typically in the range of 150.

“It lacks the fluidity of trance, which is the main characteristic that distinguishes it from hard trance.

“It sounds much like hardcore albeit at (relatively speaking) slower BPM counts.”

Got it? Good.

In short, hardstyle is… a lot. Some people adore it, and good for them.

Others – hello! – can’t wrap their head around it, because, y’know, it’s horrific.

Still, you’d like to think that just about everyone would recognise that unleashing a hardstyle take on The Cranberries’ iconic ‘Zombie’ is a bad idea on paper.

In practice?

It transcends being a bad idea and becomes something so outrageously terrible that you watch it several times in a row and wonder if you’re still asleep, suffering through some class of fever dream that requires years of therapy to work through.

Step forward Tiësto, who treated revellers at this year’s Tomorrowland bash in Belgium to a rendition of that incredible song – fellow Dutch DJ Ran-D’s effort, it seems – in genuinely jaw-dropping fashion.

A reminder, were it needed, that ‘Zombie’ is a protest anthem about years of bloodshed and the loss of innocent lives that still holds important impact today, but yeah, here’s a fucking hardstyle version.

Nailed it, mate!
