Tom Grennan on Eminem, S Club 7, and the album that described his life

Hugh Carr

“That’s the beautiful things about songs.”

Tom Grennan is currently in the middle of the busiest summer of his career yet. With an arena tour underway, including a show at Fairview Park on 30 June, and his new album What Ifs & Maybes on Friday (16 June), JOE was able to catch up with the singer-songwriter to chat all things music.

The lead single, “Here”, deals with themes of overcoming adversity. We asked Grennan about his songwriting process, and whether he writes for himself, or his listeners;

“Definitely. I’m not thinking about anybody else apart from me when I’m writing because it’s my story,” Grennan said.

“But then these songs become an album, and this album then becomes somebody else’s, and then it becomes their story. And that’s what the beautiful thing is about songs.

“It means something to the artist who’s written them, and then they go out into the world and then they elaborate, in some words, someone’s life, you know. And that’s what’s sick about it.”

Naturally, we had to ask which album put Grennan’s life into words. His answer?

“Yeah, I think Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black was one of them albums for me.”

Tickets are available for Grennan’s headline show in Fairview Park on 30 June, and his new album What Ifs and Maybes is available on all platforms on Friday (16 June).
