Video: Living legend Gianfranco Zola stars in new music video for Irish band The Wonder Villains

It's safe to say we're insanely jealous...

It’s safe to say we’re insanely jealous…

Derry band The Wonder Villains have been going from strength to strength over the past number of years and, here at JOE HQ, we reckon they’ve just reached an all-time career high. You can forget your Grammys, Ivor Novello awards and duetting with Phil Coulter, because it really doesn’t get any better than this.

The party-lovin’ poptastic foursome, made up of members Eimear Coyle, Cheylene Murphy, Ryan McGroarty and Kieran Coyle, had written ‘Zola’, a song about none other than Italian footballing legend and JOE hero, Gianfranco Zola. As you do. Little did they know, however, that through a set of brilliantly bizarre coincidences, the twinkle-toed man himself would be able to star in the music video for the super song.

*JOE swoons*

Talking to JOE, band member Ryan explained how the class collaboration came to be…

“We met him through a combination of luck and insane coincidence! A friend of ours went to the same university as his daughter, I got in contact and she knew the song and liked the band. It was quite straightforward, I called Gianfranco and he was really happy to help us out. He is the coolest guy you could ever meet. We talked about music and played football, what a day.”

Eimear went on to add that Gianfranco was “so nice and funny! Such a gent. Joking about how unfair the teams were to have the boys against the girls!”

Our favourite bit, however, has to be the fact that Kieran’s new claim to fame is that he actually saved one of Zola’s penalties. That’s right. He. Saved. One. Of. Zola’s. Penalties.

He’ll never wash his hands/bum/whatever-part-of-his-body-he-saved-the-penalty-with ever again.

‘Zola’ is the third track from The Wonder Villains’ new album ‘Rocky.’ Check it out on iTunes here and Amazon here.
