17 years after the ‘Perfect Day’ video, the BBC are back with a star studded cover, whoch will also raise money for charity.
Last night the BBC premiered a cover of God Only Knows, the Beach Boys tune, by a whole host of well-known names. The song was recorded to promote the launch of BBC Music, and it will also be sold to raise money for Children in Need, just as the famous Lou Reed cover, Perfect Day, did in 1997.
Of all the stars in the 1997 video, only Elton John appears in the new one. This time Beach Boy Brian Wilson stars, alongside [deep breath] One Direction, Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams. Jake Bugg, Lorde, Emeli Sandé, Chris Martin, Kylie Minogue, Paloma Faith, Sam Smith, Florence Welch, Chrissie Hynde, Brian May, Dave Grohl, Alison Balsom, Martin James Bartlett, Danielle de Niese, Nicola Benedetti, Eliza Carthy, Baaba Maal, Jamie Cullum, Jaz Dhami plus some BBC faces too.
So, is it any good. Well Wilson, who wrote it, loves it, saying: “All of the artists did such a beautiful job I can’t thank them enough.” Hey, if Brian likes it, who are we to argue with him.
