The Foo Fighters were in Japan this weekend, headlining the Sunday night of the Summersonic Festival.
Along with performing many of their well-known hits, they also welcomed Rick Astley – also appearing at the Tokyo festival – on stage for a special rendition of his 1980s hit-turned-meme, Never Gonna Give You Up.
“Ladies and gentlemen, would you please welcome our new best friend, Rick Astley,” Dave Grohl told the crowd. “This is fucking crazy. I just met him two minutes ago.”
With Astley taking the microphone (and yelling “come on you motherfuckers”) the band began to play the opening riff to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana, before launching in to Astley’s 1987 classic.
Enjoy…
Despite only just becoming ‘best friends’ with Astley, Grohl and his bandmates are more than familiar his most famous song. Only a couple of years ago, they used it to ‘Rickroll’ the notorious Westboro Baptist Church before their gig in Kansas City.
After the concert in Tokyo, Astley thanked those that had attended the festival, describing Sunday as one of the best nights of his life.
Thank you 'Summer sonic' just had one of the best nights of my life !!! My gig was great then @foofighters ! Just nuts !
