WATCH: The lead singer of FOALS has some great advice for aspiring musicians in Guinness’ latest video

JOE

The final video in a powerful series by Guinness.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve brought you three inspiring videos featuring RudimentalLady Leshurr and Lianne La Havas as part of the Guinness Legacies series, which explores music producer, John Hammond’s remarkable legacy through the eyes of contemporary musicians.

Last up to discuss the legendary talent scout, is Yannis Philippakis, lead singer of FOALS.

In this powerful clip, Yannis discusses the importance of ambition and hunger in creativity, along with the influence of John Hammond in taking risks on unconventional musicians, who were ahead of the game when they started out, but ultimately achieved lasting success.

Now an arena-and festival-headlining group, the story of FOALS is one of outsider success. The Oxford-bred band of university drop-outs began by challenging convention and have made something lasting as a result.

In the beginning, FOALS brought together hugely disparate influencers: hardcore and mathrock, German minimal techno, and Hammond-backed outsider artist Arthur Russell. They sought to distill these influences in danceable, rock music form, bringing conventional song structures together with unusual time signatures.

The influences and ethos of the band led them to challenge the staid rock orthodoxy of the day. Their dissatisfaction with the traditional venue circuit led them to create a thriving house party scene, bringing a huge community of previously ignored and disaffected music fans together.

Another superb addition to the online series by Guinness.
