YUNGBLUD on going on the sesh with Niall Horan and Lewis Capaldi

Hugh Carr

“I’m like the naughty mate, the weird friend that they’ve all got.”

YUNGBLUD is every Irish mammy’s worst nightmare, personified. Tattooed, pierced, non-conforming to gender ideals, Dominic Harrison’s stage persona is an abrasive shot of pop-punk energy that hasn’t been seen since the days of Kerrang and Scuzz.

This outspoken outsider attitude, however, has led the English singer to amass a cult following, with millions of fans worldwide fervently attending shows in arenas, followed by afterparties with the man himself in packed-out pubs.

Ahead of his gig in Collins Barracks as part of the “Wider Than Pictures” series with Singular Artists, JOE spoke to YUNGBLUD about his unique friendship with one of Ireland’s favourite sons, Niall Horan;

“I know Niall through Lewis Capaldi. We had a night out in LA, can’t remember when, but it was like another blurry night, y’know what I mean? I just got along with him, he’s such a friendly fella. A nice guy, good spirit, can drink, obviously, he’s Irish, we’re thick as thieves, us three.”

YUNGBLUD is acutely aware, of course, that his image is very different from that of the two singer-songwriters;

“I’m like the naughty mate, the weird friend that they’ve all got, y’know what I mean? It’s like, ‘why are you hanging out with a lad in a devil hat and a skirt?’, and they’re like ‘Ah Lewis said he was good craic.'”

We asked him what it would be like if he showed up to Niall’s mother’s house, which prompted a not-too-bad impression of an Irish mammy saying “You better not go painting your nails like that boy”.

Whether he’ll break out the Irish accent at his upcoming show in Collins Barracks on August 23, we’ll have to wait and see.

Tickets for YUNGBLUD’s show are on sale on the Singular Artists website.
