1 and 2c coins will be phased out in Ireland as of today

Change will be rounded up to the nearest 5c

Change will be rounded up or down to the nearest 5c.

The idea was initially trialed in Wexford and with its 85% approval rate among retail customers, the nationwide phasing out of 1 and 2c coins will begin today.

According to The Journal, your change will be rounded up or down to the nearest 5c for each purchase, so if an item comes to €1.02 it will be rounded to €1, while something billed as €1.03 will come to €1.05.

The Central Bank is running the plan and have full confidence in the new system:

“Consumers may be surprised at first but, judging from the experience in Wexford, they will embrace rounding very quickly”.

For those less enthusiastic about the idea, it is not yet compulsory so if you want the exact change back you can still request it.
