Cocaine seizure

That’s a lot of cocaine.

Cocaine worth an estimated $77 million (€68 million) has been recovered at the port of New York and New Jersey – the biggest seizure there for 25 years.

Authorities at the Port of New York and New Jersey have seized about 1,455kg of cocaine in what authorities are calling the second largest cocaine seizure of all time.

The joint operation involved US Customs and Border Protection, the US Coast Guard, Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the New York Police Department and the New York State Police.

The drugs were found aboard a shipping container that entered the US from Buenaventura, Colombia, last month and have an estimated street value of €68 million.

The authorities were conducting a routine inspection aboard the M.S.C. Carlotta last month when they noticed the pins that held one of the containers’ doors in place appeared to have been doctored.

The container was supposed to contain dried fruit but instead, officers opened the doors to find 60 tightly wrapped bundles of white powder.

It’s the biggest cocaine seizure at the ports since 1994 and the second-largest cocaine seizure on record.
