A teenager collapsed mid-game while playing football in the capital last night.

16-year-old Izzy Dezu collapsed last night during a football match at the Athletic Union League (AUL) Complex last night on the Clonshaugh Road, Dublin 17.

Dezu was involved in a competitive fixture at the north Dublin complex when he suddenly collapsed. The game in question was a Dublin and District Schoolboys League U-16 Premier Division game between Dezu’s own team Shelbourne FC and St Kevin’s Boys.

It is understood that the teenager collapsed during the second half of the game, which kicked off at 7:30pm.

The exact cause of the young player’s death is not yet known.

Upon Dezu’s collapse, emergency services were alerted. Paramedics from Dublin Fire Brigade worked on the youth for some time before he was brought by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Shelbourne FC confirmed the news, while also wishing condolences to his family and friends, on their Twitter page this morning.

The game last night was due to be the St Kevin’s Boys team’s last game together as a team. This match was due to take place last week, but was rescheduled due to a bereavement.
