19-year-old University of Limerick student dies after ‘freak accident’

Cathy Donohue

A 19-year-old student has passed away as a result of injuries sustained from a fall at a Limerick home.

Sophie Coll, a University of Limerick student, had transferred to the campus from NUIG and it’s thought that the tragic incident happened at rented student accommodation.

A spokesperson for the college said that the fall happened four days ago and Sophie was immediately taken to University Hospital Limerick.

RTÉ reports that the UL representative confirmed that Sophie since passed away from head injuries and described the tragedy as ‘an entirely freak accident’.

The college explained that second-year business student Sophie, from Barna in Galway, had changed college recently.

A note went out to students from Professor Des Fitzgerald, the President of the University of Limerick.

It read…

Dear Staff and Students,

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you of the sudden death of UL student Sophie Coll, 2nd year, BBS International as a result of a tragic accident on Monday, 25th September.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sophie’s parents Rory and Carol, her sisters Stephanie and Abbie, her friends, housemates and fellow students.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.
