Tragic news.

Mark Sands, a 21-year-old from Louth has been confirmed dead after being involved in a car crash while on exchange as a student in Austin, Texas.

The crash happened on 1 February, and Sands passed away on Monday morning.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Mark’s family cover the costs of transporting their son home — as well as the cost of travelling to the United States to be with Mark.

The fund, started by one of Mark’s friends, spoke of him very highly: “If you’ve ever been lucky enough to meet Mark you’ve surely noticed his constant smile. He was one of the most charming and amusing people you will ever meet. Mark never met a stranger or someone he didn’t like. He had a passion for everyone he knew and he always looked out for others.”

Sands’ mother has also posted on the GoFundMe page, saying “We are overwhelmed by all your support. Your comments are uplifting and a great comfort to us. Such sadness is overwhelming us.”

The young man’s organs will be donated, and his mother has confirmed that his favourite song, ‘Elevation’ by U2, will play in the operating room.

The fund has gathered over $28,000 since it was set up three days ago. You can donate here.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was providing consular assistance.
