34 more people in Ireland have died in connection with Covid-19, according to figures released on Friday evening.

There has also been 221 more cases of the coronavirus diagnosed here, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 20,833.

Ireland’s death toll now stands at 1,265, the Department of Health has said this evening.

New figures show that 28.5% of the first 20,510 cases in Ireland were healthcare workers, which amounts to 5,840 people.

Half of all cases were in Dublin (10,170), with Kildare the next highest county on 1,215 followed by Cork on 1,154.

The median age of those diagnosed with Covid-19 was 49 years.

The HSE has said that it is working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread.

These figures were released by the Department of Health minutes after the scheduled briefing was cancelled.

Leo Varadkar will address the nation at 6.30pm this evening, where he is expected to offer an update regarding Ireland’s coronavirus situation.

Varadkar will then feature on The Late Late Show on Friday night to go into further detail on the situation.
