There has now been a total of 2,768 Covid-related deaths in Ireland, while 179,324 people have tested positive with the virus.

726 of Wednesday’s cases are in Dublin, while 314 are in Cork, 148 in Galway, 133 in Limerick, 130 in Meath. The remainder of the 1,037 are spread across all other counties.

As of 2pm this afternoon, 1,923 people are in Irish hospitals with Covid-19, with 210 of them being in the ICU.

Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said: “The number of cases and deaths that we are reporting today…shows that we cannot underestimate the highly infectious nature of this disease and the impact that it can have on families and communities.

“The virus spreads through the close contacts, through the congregation of people.”

Earlier on Wednesday, the Northern Ireland Department of Health reported that a further 905 individuals have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours.

Sadly, a further 22 deaths have been reported up north (while four of them were outside the 24 hour period).
