Time to see where your college ranks.

For the 17th year in a row, Trinity College Dublin has topped the third-level rankings in the new edition of The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019.

Trinity ranked first in three of the eight categories that make up Ireland’s only third-level ranking.

All 21 third-

level education institutions in Ireland were measured on eight distinct criteria and these include; student satisfaction levels, Leaving Certificate points achieved by incoming students, research profile, employment prospects for graduates, student to staff ratio, progression rate, expenditure on facilities and the academic achievement of their students.

Trinity has the highest research income, standing in excess of €108m, spends the most per student on facilities and services each year (€12,154) and has the best qualified entrants, with a median 523 Leaving Certificate points held by undergraduates joining the university last year.

Despite the fact that Trinity came out on top in the overall rankings, the college ranked 15th in terms of student satisfaction rate and it finished last in two different categories – effective teaching practices and quality of interactions.

This being said, it’s obvious that the pros far outweigh the cons for Trinity students because they top the list.

Elsewhere, AIT tops two categories (collaborative learning and quality of interactions) while finishing bottom in none.

In general, ITs perform particularly well in the assessment of the quality of collaborative learning within each institution, accounting for the six highest scores, while universities occupy five of the bottom six places when ranked on this measure.

In the wider Sunday Times third-level ranking, Waterford is ranked seventh in Ireland and is the top IT.

This position is the highest that the IT has ever received in the table and its success has helped push Maynooth University down to 12th place, the lowest ever finish for a university in the Sunday Times rankings.

Over the last few days, the University of Limerick was named as The Sunday Times University of the Year, while the IT of the Year award was made jointly to Dublin Institute of Technology, IT Tallaght and IT Blanchardstown – both institutions came together to form the new Technological University Dublin on January 1.
