More than 50 arrests have been made as part of this year’s Donegal International Rally, with one man having had part of his ear bitten off in the county.

The Irish Times reports that more than double the arrests made during last year’s rally have taken place this year.

The majority have been for public order offences and dangerous driving, while a man had to be taken to Letterkenny Hospital after part of his ear was bitten off during a melée in Carrigart.

Gardaí do not suspect the attack was carried out by anyone connected to the rally.

The man was able to give a statement to officers on Saturday.

According to Garda Inspector Michael Harrison, the vast majority of those attending this weekend’s rally are well behaved.

Arrests were made, according to the Times, following a security operation that included the use of the Garda helicopter.
