Famed for being both highly opinionated and controversial, American broadcaster Alex Jones has been ordered to back up his claims that a well-publicised school shooting was the work of so-called crisis actors.
On 14 December 2012, 20 children and six adult staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut were fatally shot by Adam Lanza.
Prior to the massacre, Lanza killed his mother at their nearby home. He later took his own life as first responders arrived at the school.
In the aftermath, Alex Jones argued that the shooting was staged and that those who lost loved ones on the day are actually guilty of faking the deaths of their relatives.
In line with a defamation lawsuit brought against Jones by the families of seven of the 26 children and adult staff killed at Sandy Hook, he must now hand over emails and additional materials in order to shed light on his claims.
Connecticut State Superior Court Judge Barbara Bellis made the ruling official, requesting that Jones surrender “letters, memos, emails, text messages, instant messenger logs or other electronic communications” on the shooting.
He must also turn over “all business and marketing plans, marketing data, web analytics, sales analytics and/or web traffic” relating to his conspiracy theorist platform InfoWars.
The defamation case, which argues against “a monstrous, unspeakable lie”, follows a difficult year for Jones in which he was banned from several social media sites including Twitter.
In response, his legal team have attempted to dismiss the lawsuit, noting that Jones and InfoWars are “not responsible” for the incident at Sandy Hook and that he has a right to freedom of speech.
