Almost 300 people attend funeral for a man who wasn’t visited for five years in his nursing home

This is incredibly bittersweet.

An estimated 300 people turned up for the funeral of a man who hadn’t been visited in his nursing home for half a decade prior to his death.

According to local website Kildare Now, John McMullen died in Moyglare Nursing Home in Maynooth. Having had no visitors in such a long time, the nursing home appealed for relatives of his to come forward.

Those who read the notice of his death were saddened by his lack of visitors, and so John ended up having an incredibly well-attended celebration of his life.

According to a Kildare Now reader:

“The funeral was attended by over 300 people. It was a very moving occasion with a guard of honour provided by Defence Forces veterans. Beautiful songs like The Voyage by Christy Moore was played and The Derry Air was performed as the remains were taken from the church.”
