If this gets the go ahead, it will instantly be on the bucket list.

An application has been lodged by Kerry County Council to develop a greenway in the south of the county.

The 32km greenway would run from Glenbeigh and Reenard on the Iveragh Peninsula in the county.

The proposed greenway would run parallel to the Ring of Kerry which is an iconic and internationally renowned tourist route popular with cyclists and with breath-taking scenery.

In a statement released by the council after the application was lodged, the council revealed 197 landowners will be impacted by the planned route.

A Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) notice for the acquisition of the privately-owned lands to allow the council to develop the greenway will be published on Thursday.

According to the council, the three-metre wide paved surface greenway will run from the Reenard southwest of Caherciveen to Faha west of Glenbeigh.

The greenway will require the construction of car parks, and the upgrading of existing bridges and tunnels such as the Cahersiveen Railway Bridge, Gleesk Viaduct and tunnels at Drung Hill.

Similar projects have proved very successful around the country including in Mayo and Galway.
