Here’s how to see the most spectacular meteor shower in seven years on Thursday night

Carl Kinsella

This year’s Perseid meteor shower is set to be an exceptional one.

The annual meteor shower usually consists of roughly 100 meteors an hour, but this year anyone keeping their eyes on the skies could see as many as double that.

The event, which known as an outburst, last occurred seven years ago – and meteorologists are expecting tonight’s shower to feature anywhere between 160-200 meteors per hour, making this exceptional Perseid the most spectacular shower you can see all year.

The shower will begin at roughly 10.30pm Irish time, and will be visible to the naked eye which is good news for anyone who has trouble sleeping until 4am.

If, by some chance, your view is obscured but you’d like to experience the shower, you can tune into a NASA live feed from 3am Irish time and enjoy the celestial firework show. Experts recommend finding the darkest spot possible, lying on your back and watching the storm with your own two eyes, without a telescope or binoculars.
